Tableau is a powerful data visualization tool that allows you to connect to a variety of data sources and create interactive visualizations. However, sometimes you may need to switch between different data sources dynamically, depending on the user’s selection or other factors. In this case, using Tableau Parameters can be a useful approach.

Tableau Parameters are dynamic variables that can be used to control various aspects of your visualization, such as the data source, filters, calculations, etc. By using parameters, you can create a more interactive and flexible visualization that can adapt to the user’s needs.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use Tableau Parameters to dynamically switch data sources:
- Create a parameter: Go to the Data pane, right-click in an empty space and select “Create Parameter”. Give your parameter a name and choose the data type, for example, string or integer. This parameter will be used to select the data source.
- Create a calculated field: Go to the Analysis menu, select “Create Calculated Field” and create a calculated field that will determine which data source to use based on the parameter. For example, you can use the formula IF [Parameter] = “Source 1” THEN “Source 1” ELSE “Source 2” END
- Connect to your data sources: Connect to the data sources you want to use and make sure they are in the workbook.
- Use the calculated field to control the data source: Drag the calculated field you created earlier onto the Data pane and drop it onto the Data Source field. This will allow Tableau to use the calculated field to determine which data source to use.
- Use the parameter to control the calculated field: Drag the parameter you created earlier onto a worksheet, and use it to control the calculated field. This will allow the user to select the data source they want to use.
- Publish the visualization: Finally, publish the visualization to Tableau Server or Tableau Online and share it with your team or stakeholders. They will be able to switch between the data sources dynamically by selecting the parameter.
