To create an ordered proportional symbol chart in Tableau, follow these steps:
- Connect to your data source and drag the variable you want to use as the symbols to the Columns or Rows shelf. For example, if you want to create a proportional symbol chart of sales by product category, drag Product Category to Rows.
- Drag the measure you want to use as the values of the symbols to the Size mark. For example, drag Sales to Size.
- Change the mark type from Automatic to Circle or Square, depending on your preference. This will create a proportional symbol chart with different sizes based on the values of the measure.
- To sort the symbols by their values, click on the axis header and select Sort. In the Sort dialog box, choose Ascending or Descending as the Sort Order and Field as the Sort By option. Then select Sales as the Field Name and Sum as the Aggregation.
- Optionally, you can add labels, tooltips, filters, legends, titles, and other formatting options to enhance your visualization.
You have now created an ordered proportional symbol chart in Tableau!

An ordered proportional symbol chart can be useful for businesses in many ways. Here are some examples of how businesses can benefit from using this type of visualization:
- An ordered proportional symbol chart can help compare different categories or groups based on a common measure using visual cues such as size and position. For example, a business can use an ordered proportional symbol chart to compare sales by product category or region and easily see which ones are larger or smaller than others.
- An ordered proportional symbol chart can help show relative differences or proportions based on a measure across categories or groups. For example, a business can use an ordered proportional symbol chart to show sales by product category or region as a percentage of total sales and see how they contribute to overall performance.
- An ordered proportional symbol chart can help emphasize important categories or groups based on a measure using visual cues such as color or shape. For example, a business can use an ordered proportional symbol chart to highlight products or regions that have high growth rates or profitability compared to others.
An ordered proportional symbol chart is one of the most effective types of visualization that businesses can use to display and compare quantitative data visually.
