How to Create a Two Color Area Chart?

Creating a two-color area chart in Tableau Desktop is a straightforward process that can be achieved by using the “dual axis” function and creating a calculated field. This type of chart is useful for displaying two different measures on the same chart and comparing their trends over time.

Step 1: Create a Chart

First, you will need to create an area chart of your first measure. To do this, drag the dimension you want to use on the X-axis and the first measure you want to use on the Y-axis. Then, select the “area” mark type from the top right of the screen.

Step 2: Create a Second Chart

Next, create a second chart for the second measure you want to display. Drag the same dimension to the Columns or Rows shelf, and then drag the second measure to the opposite shelf. Select the same mark type, “area” for this chart.

Step 3: Synchronize the Axis

Now that you have two area charts, you will need to synchronize their X and Y-axes so that they align correctly. To do this, right-click on the axis of one of the charts and select “Synchronize Axis.”

Step 4: Create a Dual Axis

With the two charts sharing the same axis, you will now create a dual axis by dragging the second measure to the right of the first measure on the same chart. Right-click on the axis of the second measure and select “Synchronize Axis”.

Step 5: Create a calculated field

To create a calculated field for the second measure, go to the Analysis menu, and select Create Calculated Field. In the formula area, enter a formula that will differentiate the second measure. For example, if your first measure is sales, and the second measure is profit, you can create a calculated field to show the profit percentage of sales by using the formula:


Step 6: Format the Chart

Once you have created a dual axis, you can format the chart by adjusting the colors and other visual elements to your preference. To format the chart, right-click on one of the measures and select “Format.” From here, you can change the color of the area chart, adjust the axis labels and more.
